Pattern Recognition Vol. 3

Assumptions.

“I have seen more than one project slip because of an assumption nobody thought to question. What are we assuming?”
Finding → Surface the assumption before the commitment is locked in

I have seen more than one project slip because of an assumption nobody thought to question.

Everyone had done a good job on their part.

The roadmap was agreed. Compliance had its requirements. Technology had a solution. Product had a plan.

The pieces seemed to fit.

Until one assumption underneath them turned out not to be true.

This is one of the reasons I value an outside view before a major commitment is locked in.

Not because someone outside knows the business better.

Because they weren't in the room when the assumption became accepted as fact.

What are we assuming?

Sometimes that is enough to change the conversation.

Original Illustration Pattern Recognition Vol. 3 illustration: Product, Compliance, Technology and Operations each hold a puzzle piece at a table, the pieces not quite meeting, with the word Assumption sitting unaddressed in the gap between them

Product, Compliance and Technology can each be right about their own piece and still be building on the same untested assumption. An outside view, brought in before the commitment is locked in, is what catches it.

Book a call → let's name the assumption before it's locked in
